A rigorous, peer reviewed health economic impact analysis was conducted in 2016 following implementation of the 5Q Care Test.

The results were impressive:

  • Average 'excess' length of hospital stay for 'complex' patients was reduced from 19 to 7

  • Hospital discharge assessments reduced by 81%, giving staff more time to plan the care

  • Delayed Transfers of Care out of hospital awaiting 'public funding decision' reduced to zero

  • Zero complaints from patients and relatives

  • Reduced number of Continuing Health Care packages on hospital discharge from 14 to 2

  • NHS savings of £562,000 in a 7 month period in the 1st evaluation and savings of £1.3m in a 4 month period in the 2nd evaluation

  • Minimal impact on social care referrals

  • Further evaluation in 2019 of over 3,000 patients in three ‘5Q Care Test’ adopter sites reported a 99.2% reliability in determining whether people needed social care on discharge from hospital.
